oxman_neri.jpg Neri Oxman is an architect and researcher whose work attempts to establish both new forms of experimental design and novel processes of material practice through the interface of design, computer science, structural engineering and biology. She is founder of the interdisciplinary design initiative, MATERIALECOLOGY.

A graduate of the AA School of Architecture in London, Neri is currently based at MIT as a Presidential Research Fellow and PhD candidate in Design and Computation; she is associated with the Smart Cities Group at the Media Lab and Design Lab.

Transcending conventional disciplinary and professional boundaries, Neri’s work pioneers Material Computation as a design paradigm beyond typological expression and across scales of production and performance. She promotes the aesthetics of material formation and behavior as a scientific contribution to ecological activism.

Her current work, Natural Artifice, is scheduled to appear in the Design and the Elastic Mind exhibition at MOMA to open in February 2008. It features new initiatives at the intellectual and productive interface between science, art, and design.
